CONCENTRATED SOLAR THERMAL

Concentrated solar thermal systems utilize mirrors or lenses to focus the sun’s thermal thermal energy onto a working fluid like water (creates steam that drives electric generators) or salt (creates molten salt, which stores the thermal energy). Common configurations are the “solar tower” concept and the parabolic trough, pictured here.

Pros

The thermal energy concentrated in a CSP plant can be stored and used to produce electricity when it is needed, day or night.

Cons

Needs to be sited in an area with high direct normal solar radiation. The southwestern part of the US is an ideal location.

Real Talk

Great option for a part of the county. Means of generating electricity 24 hours a day from the sun is the best possible outcome.
