Why Flash Cards?

An energy transition is coming—one that will not only see fossil fuels replaced by clean and renewable energy sources, but which will also raise some fundamental questions about traditional business models in the energy and transportation sectors. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re interested in better understanding the pieces that are (or will be) on the table, and how they might be leveraged to achieve a future with optimal environmental, social, and economic outcomes.

Conversations about energy transition planning can easily become contentious and even adversarial, in part due to a lack of consensus around industry-specific terms and concepts. These flash cards are a manifestation of ProtoGen’s mission to advance the energy transition by creating alignment among energy stakeholders. We seek to facilitate and enable these conversations, projects and other goals around and within the energy sector through provision of:

  • Market visioning and energy transition planning
  • RFP development and management
  • Curriculum development for post-secondary and technical training
  • Clean energy technology research and commercialization
  • Project development of distributed energy systems, e.g. PV, energy storage, combined heat and power (CHP), microgrids, etc.

Background and Instructions

The transition to a more distributed energy grid is bringing lots of new communities and voices to the conversation. Change will come when those asking for it are taken seriously. ProtoGen created this visual glossary for stakeholders wishing to get up to speed, providing concise information on a hundred (or so) economic (green), regulatory (blue), and technical (gray) topics related to energy transition planning. Each entry provides a definition and describes the pros and cons; a “Real Talk” section places the topic within the context of a renewable energy transition.

Purpose: The hand selected terms and textbook definitions will enable users to expand their vocabulary and allow for a more meaningful exchanges with industry members, policymakers, residents and business owners, and other stakeholders.

Card Use: A great use for the cards would be at a meeting or in a classroom. Group leaders could begin sessions by selecting a card or cards, introducing the term, giving the definition, and kicking off the conversation.

Pros and Cons: These sections are not meant to be exhaustive or comprehensive. The intent is to start and direct a conversation amongst interested parties. For example, users of the cards may take on the activity of developing a list of pros and cons for a given term. Learning is about exploration—make it fun!

The Real Talk section is ProtoGen’s effort to help users start to think strategically about the energy transition. Users will begin to see that concepts presented in the cards can be grouped to create the basis of a community plan.
